Coca-Cola denies reports they are looking at making cannabis-based drinks

However, following the news, the Coca-Cola Company released a statement of their own, stating that, as of now, they were only exploring their options. Heineken NV's Lagunitas craft-brewing label has even launched a brand specialising in non-alcoholic drinks infused with THC, marijuana's active ingredient. Coke is looking to team up with the Canadian marijuana farm Aurora Cannabis to develop the beverages.

The statement from Coke comes after it was reported that Canada's Aurora Cannabis and Coca-Cola were in talks.

Coke and Aurora would likely develop beverages that will ease inflammation, pain and cramping, a Bloomberg report said, citing sources familiar with the matter.

But anecdotal evidence suggests that CBD can help people who are struggling with depression, epilepsy, muscle cramps, and pain - as well as people trying to avoid alcohol or lose weight, the exact types of consumers who may otherwise avoid buying products from beer companies or Coca-Cola.

"The space is evolving quickly", Coca-Cola said.

The marijuana industry has been attracting interest from a handful of big corporate names as Canada and a wave of US states move to legalize recreational use of the drug.

Multiple sources with knowledge of the discussions told BNN Bloomberg that the 132-year-old cola company is in "serious" talks with Aurora Cannabis, a large marijuana company headquartered in Vancouver, Canada.

As beverage makers including Molson Coors step into the marijuana market, Coca-Cola is thinking about joining the pot party. It's still illegal at the federal level which means federal law enforcement could prosecute cannabis stores or users at any time, although so far they've mostly tolerated CBD products.

Hemp and marijuana are both cannabis plants, and both contain CBD, which can be extracted as an oil that can be added to everything from dog food to hand lotion to drinks. Cannabidiol is said to have analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties with no psychoactive effects.

In the USA, medicinal use is allowed in 29 states and the District of Columbia and nine of the states have legalised both medical and personal cannabis use.
