The official figure was released last month after an independent study. Puerto Rico has conceded that Hurricane Maria killed more than 1,400 people on the island previous year and not just the 64 in the official death toll.

The retiring Illinois Democrat-who announced this week that he will not run to be Chicago's next mayor and has expressed interest in moving to Puerto Rico after he leaves Congress-then ripped Trump for not showing enough "humility" in admitting what Gutierrez claimed was a "tremendous and deadly mistake" after Hurricane Maria.

Earlier this month, the island's governor formally raised the death toll from Hurricane Maria to an estimated 2,975 from 64 following a study conducted by researchers at The George Washington University.
