Trump expects 'positive' letter from NKorea's Kim

Beijing―Chinese President Xi Jinping will attend a regional summit in Russian Federation next week, officials said Friday, joining the prime ministers of Japan and South Korea at a gathering to which North Korean leader Kim Jong Un was invited.

"It is a day Kim Jong Un should reminisce the past 70 years of the republic, and it is an event where he has the pressure to offer a long-term statecraft vision that looks into more than 10 years that follow", said Hong Min, senior researcher of Korea Institute for National Unification.

Trump later responded by tweeting, "Kim Jong Un of North Korea proclaims "unwavering faith in President Trump.' Thank you to Chairman Kim".

South Korean officials who met with Kim this week say they forwarded a message from Trump and that Kim gave them a message to deliver to Trump.

However, there has been no indication that Kim has offered more concrete steps toward giving up his nuclear weapons and some USA officials privately doubt he is willing to abandon the arsenal.

"He particularly emphasised that he has never said anything negative about President Trump", Chung said.

"Kim also made it clear that he needs some kind of proof Trump has abandoned the U.S.'s hostile policy before moving toward denuclearisation".

Reversing the defiant statements of his officials during that period, Kim said he was willing to accept "stronger measures" to dismantle his nuclear program and pressed for a formal conclusion to the Korean War in return, a peace treaty regarded by strategic analysts as a significant boon to North Korea at this point.

The parties are struggling to implement a 1½ page document signed by Trump and Kim in June at the first-ever summit between sitting USA and North Korean leaders.

And it's a case of "you've got mail" for U.S. President Donald Trump.

So far, only one head of state, from Mauritania, is known to be visiting North Korea for the celebrations, something North Korea blames the United States for.

North Korea feels it has already shown goodwill by not testing any missiles this year.

"If they start parading ICBMs around or anything longer-range that is developed to hit US targets ... that could probably sour whatever momentum they're trying to build with the US", Schmerler said.

In the Pyongyang Declaration, Japan apologized for its past colonial rule over the Korean Peninsula and promised to provide economic assistance to North Korea once diplomatic relations are normalized.

The South Korean spokesman also said summits in September will make way for an end-of-war declaration, the chief objective of both Koreas.

North Korea said active support from all United Nations members to implement the declaration "would exert great encouragement to the dramatic changes towards relaxation of the tension and the peace on (the) Korean peninsula".

"He said he would appreciate that such good faith is accepted with good faith", Chung said.

Donald Trump has also blamed China for pressuring Pyongyang against Washington.

In early June, a large letter delivered to Trump at the White House by the highest-ranking North Korean delegation to visit there revived plans for a summit meeting between Kim and Trump in Singapore, which was held on June 12.
