Brazil's presidential election frontrunner Jair Bolsonaro stabbed at campaigning rally


Brazilian far-right congressman Jair Bolsonaro was stabbed in the abdomen during a campaign event Thursday.

The incident happened during a rally in the city of Juiz de Fora, in the state of Minas Gerais.

It is noted that doctors have operated on a policy - he received unsafe internal injuries.

The doctor said the two-hour procedure stopped serious internal bleeding and repaired most of the damage from the knifing. According to the forecasts of physicians, to recover from the knife attack, he will be at least a couple of months.

Military police have arrested a suspect who had to be rescued after angry crowds tried to lynch him - he has been identified as Adélio Bispo de Oliveira. Bolsonaro is well ahead of other presidential hopefuls in the opinion polls.

President Michel Temer quickly condemned the attack and instructed his minister of security to reinforce security for election candidates.

Bolsonaro is one of the most controversial candidates in the current electoral round because he is a defender of Brazil's 1964-1984 military dictatorship.

A hospital spokeswoman confirmed to Reuters news agency that Bolsonaro was undergoing surgery, but did not provide further details.

Earlier, one of the candidate's sons, Flavio Bolsonaro, had announced on Twitter that his father's wounds were "superficial", but he later wrote: "Unfortunately, it's more serious than we thought".

A statement from federal police said the candidate had body guards. Reuters quotes officials as saying the suspect is mentally disturbed.

Bolsonaro who has been described as Brazil's Donald Trump has quite a social media following with 8.5 million people. "'I think the left shot itself in the foot because with this attack they will end up electing Bolsonaro'". In March, while da Silva was on a campaign tour in southern Brazil before his imprisonment, gunshots hit buses in his caravan.
