Typhoon kills 9, shuts down airport in Japan


Japanese media tallied at least nine deaths.

After hitting western Japan, it is set to speed up further as it passes over the main island of Honshu and into the Sea of Japan, where it will weaken.

Typhoon Jebi has left more than 3,000 passengers stranded at a Japan airport, after sweeping across the country's main island. Kansai - which is one of the busiest airports in Japan - will remain closed until Wednesday evening at the earliest.

Popular Osaka amusement park Universal Studios Japan also remained closed Wednesday - the first time it's been closed for two consecutive days since it opened in March 2001 - as the park operator worked to fix damaged caused by the storm. Toyota Motor Corp said it was cancelling the night shift at some 14 plants. Major beverage maker Kirin Co. suspended production at its brewery in Kobe, according to Kyodo News agency.

At least 10 people have been killed in Japan by a powerful typhoon that has caused massive flooding, land slides and power outages across the country.

Typhoon Jebi is projected to make landfall on the south-western island of Shikoku or Kii Peninsula around noon (0300 GMT), according to the Meteorological Agency. Television footage showing people lining up to buy food and drinks at a convenience store in the airport.

Tokyo escaped relatively unscathed, with some intermittent squalls.
