Facebook and Twitter executives, defending their companies on Capitol Hill, said Wednesday they are aggressively trying to root out foreign interests seeking to sow divisions in American democracy as the November elections near.
"We were too slow to spot this and too slow to act", Sandberg said during the Senate hearing, addressing Russian attempts to interfere in the 2016 USA presidential election.
Google declined to send a top executive, so the company's absence is marked by a glass of water and empty chair in the hearing room. Follow the live blog below.
Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey and Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg testified before the Senate Intelligence Committee to answer questions about their platform's roles in the 2016 USA presidential election and any Russian interference in the democratic process via the social networks. "It violated the values of our company and of the country we love".
Walker's written testimony says the company found "limited activity" around government-backed election interference following the 2016 vote and took "swift action" once it did.
This acceptance of a large amount of responsibility generated enough reaction on, ironically, social media, that the Facebook COO became a trending topic on Twitter. "As [Sen. Richard Burr (R-N.C.)] has noted, 'Nothing less than the integrity of our democratic institutions, processes and ideals is at stake.' We agree, and we are determined to meet this challenge". Sandberg also added that Facebook employs 20,000 security and safety personnel who work 24 hours a day.

Twitter's Dorsey was to follow his Senate testimony with an appearance at an afternoon hearing looking at that issue in the House of Representatives.
To kick off his opening statement, Dorsey picked up his phone and said he would be tweeting out his prepared testimony.
"We believe strongly in being impartial, and we strive to enforce our rules impartially", he said. Twitter has been accused by some of suppressing conservative voices on the platform - which the company denied in July.
Both hearings will also give lawmakers their latest chance to show their own mastery of the technological material and brush off some criticism that followed the April hearing with Zuckerberg in which some Senators didn't seem to understand some basics about the social network.
In the statement, a shorter version of which Sandberg will read Wednesday, Sandberg outlines steps Facebook is taking to prevent future foreign meddling in elections through its platform.
