Two ex-presidents from opposing parties united Saturday to honor U.S. senator John McCain, in a momentous funeral that championed his aspirations of political comity but also rebuked the tribalism and division trafficked by Donald Trump.
Meghan McCain remembered "the love of a father who mentors as much as comforts" and said she came to appreciate how much he suffered and how he triumphed over the years of torture he endured at the hands of his North Vietnamese captors.

Former Presidents Bush and Obama, both challenged by Mr McCain in their bids for the White House, drew on the senator's legacy at home and overseas to talk of the nation's values in remarks that at times seemed a clear rebuke of President Trump and his brand of politics.
The former president noted John McCain was a conservative lawmaker, but said, "he did understand that some principles transcend politics, that some values transcend party".
Before he went into politics, Mr McCain was a US Navy pilot who was shot down over Hanoi while on a bombing mission in 1967. "It has been mentioned today, and we've seen footage this week John pushing back against supporters who challenged my patriotism during the 2008 campaign".
"For John and me, there was a personal journey", he said.
