Deedra Abboud was also in the running for the Democratic Party seat, while the highly-contested Republican Party seat was also sought out by former state Sen. Voters participating in Florida's primary will tap nominees for governor, a position that will give the winner's party an advantage in a key political battleground heading into the 2020 presidential campaign.

But the race to embrace the polarizing Trump could make it harder in November for the Republican victor. But his more moderate stance on immigration and his deciding vote past year against Trump's efforts to repeal President Barack Obama's health care law turned off many GOP voters.

Trump spared Arpaio a possible jail sentence past year by pardoning his federal conviction stemming from his immigration patrols. McSally was expected to win on the basis of Kelli Ward and Joe Arpaio splitting the anti-establishment vote, but at least for now it appears that McSally has blown both challengers out of the water even put together. A former Air Force colonel who was the first woman to fly a fighter jet in combat, McSally is seen as the GOP's strongest candidate against the expected Democratic nominee, Rep. Kyrsten Sinema.

Sinema and McSally's Senate runs also create House openings in Arizona, a fast-growing and increasingly diverse state where Democrats are eager to gain a foothold.

Trump has not endorsed any of the three Republicans. John McCain's ailing health caused a last-minute controversy.

McSally, an air force fighter pilot, easily defeated Kelli Ward, a hardline former state senator, and Joe Arpaio, the former Maricopa County sheriff whose criminal conviction was pardoned by Donald Trump a year ago, when they split the anti-establishment vote.

There are more than a half-dozen competitive Florida House races that will choose nominees, too.
