"(Gillum) wants to abolish ICE; he wants a billion-dollar tax increase; he wants a single payer health care system in Florida, which would bankrupt the state.

Sanders initially endorsed Gillum on August 1 and campaigned for him at a rally in the state earlier this month.

Gillum won the primary Tuesday after upsetting a field of better-known and better funded candidates.

The Real Clear Politics average of polls shows DeSantis leading Putnam and several other candidates, though the race has tightened in the final weeks of the campaign.

Well, he lost. As for the Democratic gubernatorial nominee, Rep. Gwen Graham was the supposed favorite, but Cook Political Report's David Wasserman projects Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum to clinch the win. DeSantis, who was endorsed by Trump, beat state Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam.

No one imagines that Gillum will have an easy time of it in Florida, a politically-volatile battleground state where Republicans won the 2010 and 2014 gubernatorial races.

Gillum will now square off with DeSantis in what will be viewed as a referendum on Trump in a battle to replace Scott, who easily won his primary battle Tuesday for the Republican nomination to challenge Bill Nelson, a moderate Democrat, for his US senate seat.

Among African-American and young voters, key voting blocs that have been dormant in recent elections, Gillum's win could mean an even more motivated electorate come Election Day.

Gillum, a favorite of progressives, spent the least of the five major Democratic candidates and had the smallest television presence. Gillum has called on the man he is hoping to replace, outgoing Republican Gov. Rick Scott, to suspend the state's controversial "Stand Your Ground" gun law, and he supports a ban on assault weapons. He easily won his primary, setting up a showdown with Democratic Sen.

The race is already one of the most expensive in the country.

Among those on the Arizona ballot was former state Sen. At FiveThirtyEight, Nathaniel Rakich says, correctly I think, that Democrats may be hurting in the general election if Gillum takes down Graham.
