Twitch Announces the End to Ad-Free Viewing for Prime Members

Amazon has offered the 20% pre-order discount since 2016, effectively bringing the price of a standard $60 game down to $48 for Prime members, saving $12 right off the bat. Now it gives members a gift card for a future purchase.

Twitch Prime, for those not familiar, is a program that allows Amazon Prime members to attach their accounts to Twitch in order to receive special benefits as they consume content. This new pre-order benefit is replacing the current discount on physical game pre-orders. Now that GCU is gone, Amazon has now chose to also get rid of the 20% pre-order discount.

In addition to cutting back the new game discount, Amazon has also eliminated the Twitch Prime benefit of "Ad-Free Viewing Experience Across Twitch", which no longer appears on the Twitch Prime benefits page as of an update this morning. And before you think you can take advantage of this, the credit is canceled if you return the game. This credit can be used on nearly anything sold by Amazon.com.

This comes as Twitch - which lets gamers record and share in-game videos - realizes that advertising is "an important source of support for creators", according to the company's blog post.

Now it's just a matter of seeing how much these changes will affect Amazon Prime's membership count.

As we have continued to add value to Twitch Prime, we have also re-evaluated some of the existing Prime benefits. This change will strengthen and expand that advertising opportunity for creators so they can get more support from their viewers for doing what they love.

New Twitch Prime members will no longer have access to ad-free viewing after September 14, the streaming platform Twitch announced today.

Twitch might be getting big enough to renegotiate its arrangement with parent company Amazon, but that's not the only gaming bonus that Prime subscribers are losing. For a full ad-free experience, Twitch says you can buy a subscription to Twitch Turbo.
