Former U.S. security leaders blast Trump for yanking John Brennan’s clearance

Departing for NY on Friday, President Trump said he did not know McRaven, but added that he had received a "tremendous response from having done that because security clearances are very important to me". Many people don't even know who he is, and now he has a bigger voice.

The only question remaining is whether the collusion amounts to a "constituted criminally liable conspiracy", Brennan wrote.

McRaven was commander of the U.S. Joint Special Operations Command from 2011 to 2014, and oversaw the Navy SEAL raid that killed Osama bin Laden in Pakistan. I suspect I'll be taking [his security clearance] away very quickly.

Sanders said Trump is also reviewing the clearances of James Clapper, James Comey, Michael Hayden, Sally Yates, Susan Rice, Andrew McCabe, Peter Strzok, Lisa Page, and Bruce Ohr.

He denied that he was trying to silence Brennan, a frequent critic of the president.

He actually did Brennan a favor, he argued, because he now has increased name recognition because of the controversy over the president's move, which he told The Wall Street Journal was prompted by Brennan's role in special counsel Robert Mueller's Russian Federation probe.

"As former senior intelligence officials, we feel compelled to respond in the wake of the ill-considered and unprecedented remarks and actions by the White House regarding the removal of John Brennan's security clearances", they wrote.

"Through your actions, you have embarrassed us in the eyes of our children, humiliated us on the world stage and, worst of all, divided us as a nation", McRaven said of Trump.

After the White House said Brennan - a notable Trump critic - had been stripped of clearance due to his "erratic" behavior, Trump admitted it was because of his criticism and comments on the Trump campaign's ties with Russian Federation.

Trump later said that he stripped Brennan's clearance because of his role in investigating Russia's interference in the 2016 presidential election. This comes days after Trump told reporters that he blames Brennan and his other enemies in the intelligence community for Robert Mueller's investigation. "I think that they're very duplicitous".

The move has united a who's who of former top intelligence officials who served under both Democratic and Republican administrations. Rove said Brennan has been "over-the-top" and "irresponsible" with his criticisms against the president - though he wasn't sure how advantageous it would be for Trump to paint Brennan as the newest member of "the resistance". Last year, in a speech at the University of Texas, he pushed back against Trump's assault on the news media as "the enemy of the American people".
