Far-right conspiracy theorist Alex Jones has been kicked off Twitter for a week after breaking abusive behaviour rules. "We haven't suspended the account but are requiring tweets which contained a broadcast in violation of our rules are deleted", he added in a statement.

Twitter has struggled to articulate a clear stance in recent weeks as its counterparts, starting with Apple, removed Jones' content in rapid succession. He can still browse Twitter, but can't tweet, retweet, etc. for 7 days. Among his claims is that the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School mass shooting, which left 20 children and six adults dead, was a hoax.

Twitter's suspension comes after the company defended its decision to allow Jones and InfoWars to remain active on its site, despite the actions from other companies.

A spokesperson for the social media company told CNN that Jones was suspended after posting a video where he declared "now is the time to act on the enemy before they do a false flag". But others have defended the choice to ban Jones, citing the anti-hate speech rules and nonviolence policies nearly universally adopted by major internet platforms.

"I don't know. We have found that it does have the potential to. impact and change behavior", Dorsey said.

But Dorsey did state that the first priority of Twitter is to "to put the safety of individuals first in every single thing that we do, and we need to enforce our rules and also evolve our rules around that". So there is a lot of debt that we have to pay down.

Some of those efforts backfired last month after some high-profile Republicans accused Twitter of "shadow-banning" their accounts by restricting users' ability to find them through the search function. His media tour last week kicked off with a radio appearance with right-wing commentator Sean Hannity.
