Sen. Rand Paul says he delivered Trump letter to Putin


According to the newspaper, "the White House is drafting an executive order that would authorize President Trump to sanction foreigners who interfere in United States elections, the administration's latest effort to demonstrate it is serious about combating Russian disinformation and hacking".

Trump's meeting with Putin received lower marks, with 23 percent calling it successful and 35 percent calling it unsuccessful.

Vladimir Putin presented President Donald Trump with a series of requests during their private meeting in Helsinki last month, including new talks on controlling nuclear arms and prohibiting weapons in space, according to a Russian document obtained by POLITICO.

The Trump administration has prepared an eight-page draft of an executive order that would allow the White House to sanction non-United States citizens for meddling in US elections.

Paul is not the first USA lawmaker to visit Russian Federation in recent weeks: last month, eight congressional Republicans traveled to Moscow and met with high-ranking officials, including senior members of Russia's parliament and the foreign minister, Sergey Lavrov.

Paul described the letter from Trump as a correspondence that "emphasized the importance of further engagement in various areas including countering terrorism, enhancing legislative dialogue and resuming cultural exchanges".

There has been no indication that a Putin-Paul meeting will take place.

The topics that Paul said were included in the letter are things Paul wished to discuss with Putin, not topics Trump asked him to raise with Putin, the official told CNN.

The two countries are also at odds over Syria and Ukraine.
