Firefighters continue to battle the blaze, which is now only 30 percent contained.

Last year's Thomas fire, which consumed 281,000 acres in Santa Barbara and Ventura counties, remains the state's largest on record.

Cal Fire officials said water-dropping aircraft made some progress against one of the fires in the complex over the weekend, while the other has grown substantially, spreading into the Mendocino National Forest.

The blaze is now larger than NY city and is approaching the size of Los Angeles.

Both fires began on July 27. That's higher than the five-year average for the same seven-month period ― 3,405 fires over 118,811 acres.
