Hector Enters Central Pacific as Category 4 Hurricane

The Big Island of Hawaii is in the cone of uncertainty, CBS News weather producer David Parkinson reports, but Hector should dodge landfall by Wednesday or Thursday and pass south of the Big Island.

Farther out to sea, a strengthening Hurricane Hector headed for the central Pacific as a Category 4 storm, with winds of 140 miles per hour (220 kph), the Center Pacific Hurricane Center in Honolulu reported.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami said the hurricane poses no short-term threat to land.

The satellite presentation of Hurricane Hector has improved overnight, with a well defined 10 to 15 nautical mile wide eye surrounded by a large ring of -70 to -80 Celsius cloud tops.

Hector was a Category 3 storm early Sunday as it churned toward the Hawaiian Islands, an archipelago that includes the Big Island.

Hurricane Hector is tracking for a close call with Hawaii's Big Island, parts of which are still coping with destruction from the ongoing eruption of the Kilauea volcano. Kilauea's latest volcanic event began more than three months ago, sending destructive currents of lava into neighborhoods on the island's southeast side.

The National Hurricane Centre (NHC) said Hurricane Hector is recording sustained winds of 140mph, which are capable of causing devastating damage to populated areas.

Hurricane Hector updated track as of 11 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 5, 2018.

"Some fluctuations in intensity are expected tonight and Monday".

Gradual weakening is projected Monday night through Wednesday.

Scientists differ over how hurricanes and volcanoes might interact, including the question of whether low atmospheric pressure from a major cyclone could help trigger an eruption, and much remains unknown on the subject.

The hurricane is expected to diverge from directly hitting the Hawaiian Islands.
