Corning Says Gorilla Glass 6 Can Survive Multiple Drops

Corning has unveiled Gorilla Glass 6 as an all-new glass protection for mobile devices. "Gorilla Glass 6 is an entirely new glass composition that can be chemically strengthened to give it significantly higher levels of compression than is possible with Gorilla Glass 5". And Corning didn't say that the next-generation iPhone and iPad will use Gorilla Glass 6, but it's a fairly safe bet. The idea is that the new levels of compression will assist and help the device built with Gorilla Glass 6 survive multiple drops.

According to Corning, the average person drops their smartphone 7 times a year. Keeping that in mind, the new Gorilla Glass was engineered to not only improve upon its predecessor by surviving drops from higher but also by surviving multiple drops. The engineers worked to create "an entirely new material" that can withstand those drops. Corning Inc. studied the pattern of potentially damaging drops, which have risen exponentially. These designs are providing new features and applications for consumers, such as enhanced wireless charging, larger screen sizes with smaller bezels, and customization through printed glass backs.

Corning has announced the next iteration of its highly durable Gorilla Glass.

Only 34 percent are not anxious about an impending trade war, with 11 percent not concerned at all. Imports expanded by 14.1 percent to $175.1 billion, down from the previous month's 26 percent.

This is where Gorilla Glass 6 comes in. This is up to two times better than Gorilla Glass 5. The primary focus this time has been on the drop and impact resistance, instead of scratch resistance of the glass. Availability: Corning Gorilla Glass 6 is now being evaluated by multiple customers and is expected to reach the market in the next several months. The company has also worked to make its glass more flexible, which makes it less prone to shattering, and thinner so manufacturers can reduce the weight of their products.

Gorilla Glass is one of the more popular choices for device makers, because it means they can tout their devices' durability for real world consumers. However, it might be "several months" until it is first seen on shipping devices.
