One Firefighter Killed Battling NorCal Wildfire


The deceased firefighter, 36-year-old Braden Varney, was killed while using a bulldozer to dig a trench meant to slow the spread of the fire. Mr Varney leaves behind a wife and two small children.

Bigger and more "explosive" wildfires are raging across the U.S. West, with the area burned in Colorado already four times the size of last year's total, as rising temperatures, drought and a buildup of forest fuels supercharge blazes.

Officials ordered evacuations for part of the park, including Cedar Lodge/Savage's Trading Post, Sweetwater Ridge, Clearing House and Mariposa Pines.

The U.S. Forest Service says about 1,500 firefighters and support personnel are now on the fire.

Increased monsoonal activity has also significantly lowered the fire danger risk for Grand Canyon National Park, and the park rescinded Stage 2 fire restrictions July 13.

California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection Chief Nancy Koerperich said Saturday that Braden Varney was cutting a "fire break" with the vehicle to prevent the blaze from spreading when he was killed.

Investigators were working to determine further circumstances surrounding Varney's death, but they believe he was working his way out of the fire area when he was killed, Koerperich said.
