Hurricane Chris is rapidly strengthening, and the National Hurricane Center has named it a Category 2 storm.

Additional weakening is expected as the storm moves northeastward with Chris expected to become a post-tropical cyclone by Thursday afternoon.

RAC Vice President and Community Services Officer Doug Mercer, VO1DM, who is also IARU Region 2 Emergency Coordinator, urged Canadian radio amateurs continue to monitor alerts issued by the Canadian Hurricane Centre and forecasts issued by Environment Canada. When the storm reaches Newfoundland, it will bring heavy rains totaling one to three inches with isolated maximum amounts of six inches, posing the risk of flash flooding.

Although Hurricane Chris is headed towards Canada, it will still create severe weather for those on the U.S. East Coast.

Wind warnings are in effect for the southeastern half of the Avalon Peninsula, which could see southerly wind gusts up to 100 km/h Thursday evening. "The colder waters have likely stabilized the boundary layer, which has inhibited stronger winds aloft from mixing down to the surface", according to the National Hurricane Center (NHC).

On average, the third named storm forms August 14, and the second hurricane forms August 29, so Chris is keeping the season's activity well above par. "While we do not expect major impacts from this storm, we will continue to watch it closely". There is a 50 percent chance it re-forms into a tropical system over the weekend as it tracks east in the Atlantic and away from land.
