WhatsApp starts new feature to let users identify forwarded messages

The forwarded message designation is meant as a measure to control the spread of viral misinformation in countries like India, where the company has 200 million users. If the person identifies and you wish to add to your contacts that is also feasible. Our first step is placing newspaper advertisements across the country in English, Hindi, and several other languages. To overcome the problem, Whatsapp has offered a grant of $50,000 to social researchers who can find a solution to avoid these tragic incidents. And to help users spot when a message has been forwarded, rather than written directly by a friend, the company is now introducing a new feature to WhatsApp app users globally. Of course if the latter is more popular, then the addition of a label would quite possibly lead to easier identification of forwarded messages and reduction in the spread of unverified news - an activity which is unfortunately quite common these days.

Whatsapp had also told the government that it is "horrified by these awful acts of violence" and its strategy to deal with the situation involves giving people the controls and information they need to stay safe while working pro-actively to prevent misuse of the service.

According to Wabetainfo, the feature will analyse the links sent through WhatsApp and check if these redirect users to fake or potentially risky websites.

We do wonder what exactly is WhatsApp's definition of a suspicious website though.

While the Law and order machinery is taking steps to apprehend the culprits, the abuse of platform like WhatsApp for repeated circulation of such provocative content are equally a matter of deep concern. WhatsApp is working on this new feature to curb those suspicious links spreading such news. WhatsApp had also teamed up with Indian fact-checking group to fight hoax news stories.

Still, there are some limitations to the feature. Instagram has added a notification called "You're All Caught Up" that lets users know if they've seen everything posted within the last 48 hours. "This is something that Brazilians are already doing when they get something that was forwarded by somebody else and they want to deliver it anyway".
