NBA basketball legend LeBron James has signed a deal to play for the Los Angeles Lakers for the next four years.

James, the 33-year-old four-time league MVP and three-time National Basketball Association champion, was expected to make a quick decision on his future after opting out of his contract with the Cavaliers on Friday.

Only on this occasion James leaves two years after delivering the city's first championship in more than 52 years, and with Cavs fans wishing him well and thanking him for an incredible run.

Wojnarowski added that disgruntled San Antonio Spurs star Kawhi Leonard is still set on also donning the iconic purple and gold colors.

Under normal circumstances, it could be troubling to sign a 33-year-old to a four-year contract, but there is nothing normal about LeBron.

Once James committed to the Lakers, Stephenson was a top player on the team's priority list. Earlier this season, James was flattered when a Pennsylvania company paid for three billboards in OH urging James to come to Philadelphia, where the club has been abiding by a "Trust The Process" mantra while rebuilding.

Los Angeles Lakers, San Antonio Spurs re-engage in Kawhi Leonard trade talks
Smith said Thursday that James "reached out to Kevin Durant via text, from what I'm told, about coming to Los Angeles ". Thus, the Spurs may have realized they need to get something valuable for Kawhi while they still can.

Caldwell-Pope, 25, will head into his second season with the Lakers after finishing a one-year, $18 million deal.

Trades for other stars will be on the table for the Lakers, but it's unclear what other moves they could make in free agency right now.

"Welcome to the family KingJames", retired Lakers great Kobe Bryant tweeted after James announced the move. That's made it tough for Cleveland to upgrade its roster, but the Cavs remain committed to bringing back James even for just one more year.

While dethroning the Golden State Warriors will be very hard, the Lakers are heading in the right direction. However, with James signing, they will once again be a playoff team, and depending on the development of their young core, could be a threat in the Western Conference.

In 82 games this season, James averaged 27.5 points, 8.6 rebounds and 9.1 assists. The Cavs were swept in the NBA Finals this past season by Golden State who also beat Cleveland in the 2017 finals. But it was with the Miami Heat in 2012 that he won his first championship.

James isn't planning any more comments and there won't be a welcoming press conference or celebration in Los Angeles, a person familiar with his plans said Sunday night on the condition of anonymity.
