'Minor explosion' at Southgate underground station sparks mass evacuation

Police have been called to reports of an explosion at a London Tube station.

Emergency services attend the scene of a small explosion at Southgate Underground station, in London, Tuesday June 19, 2018.

The station has now been closed as police, ambulance and fire services remain at the scene and parts of the Piccadilly line are now closed.

Paramedics have treated three people at the scene and two were taken to hospital for their injuries.

Local reports suggest that one person was taken out of the station on a stretcher.

Twitter user Hal wrote: "I was at Southgate Station when this commotion started". I was outside the station about to enter the 125 bus.

Darren Yarlett, 36, was driving home in Southgate but police had cordoned off roads near the station.

"Investigations are ongoing, but the incident is not being treated as suspicious or terror related. No serious injuries reported and enquiries continue", confirmed British Transport Police.

He told the Standard: "The police moved us on, but they said there was an explosion in the station".

Some accounts indicate that there was a tipoff of a suspicious package which was being investigated by the police at the time of the explosion.
