State Dept: US Diplomats in Cuba Getting Medical Exams Following Sonic Attack

American investigators have not yet determined who or what is causing the symptoms and illnesses.

"Symptoms to be attentive for include dizziness, headaches, tinnitus, fatigue, cognitive issues, visual problems, ear complaints and hearing loss, and difficulty sleeping", the warning stated.

Twenty-one USA diplomats in Cuba were affected last August by sonic attacks with an acoustic device, according to the State Department. The incident rattled U.S. -Cuba relations, but the occurrence of similar symptoms in China has raised suspicions about whether China, Russia, or another country might be to blame.

On June 6, the US government said that it had brought a group of people from that consulate back to the United States for further evaluation of their symptoms, and that it was offering screening to anyone at the USA embassy in Beijing or other consulates in China who requested it.

United States of America has recalled two members of a diplomatic mission in Cuba to survey for possible traumatic brain injury, told The Associated Press from three us official.

A USA official, who wasn't authorized to discuss the situation publicly and requested anonymity, said the evacuated American government workers were being brought from China for testing to the University of Pennsylvania.

The medical screenings in China are continuing, Nauert said. The team arrived in Guangzhou last week to begin evaluating Americans and will go next to Beijing.

Recall that from China sent several American diplomats and their family members to undergo medical examinations.

Two other officials say the individuals are being tested at the University of Pennsylvania. Most of the incidents were accompanied by freaky, unexplained sounds that initially led US investigators to suspect a sonic attack. As of May 2017, when the State Department inspector general's office conducted its last inspection of the missions in China, nearly 900 Americans worked at them, including 168 who were hired locally. It is also the only US diplomatic installation in China authorized to process immigrant visas and handle adoptions.

The alert comes as a USA medical team is screening more Americans who work at the Guangzhou consulate. The consulate opened months after the establishment of diplomatic relations between Beijing and Washington in 1979 and moved to its new purpose-built facility in 2013.
