Republicans Come Out Ahead In California House Races

Democrats, hoping for a blue wave in November, feared they may not break into the top two spots in several Republican-held districts, but it appeared Wednesday they managed to advance in multiple races, with others still too close to call.

"Get the vote out in California today for Rep. Kevin McCarthy and all of the great GOP candidates for Congress. Keep our country out of the hands of High Tax, High Crime Nancy Pelosi", Trump said, referring to the 78-year-old House Democratic minority leader.

Both parties were touting a good night in California a day after the so-called "jungle primaries", where Republicans and Democrats were able to advance candidates to the general election in several key districts.

Republicans edged out the top spot in California congressional districts 10, 22, 23, 25, 39, 45, 48 and 49.

The state allows absentee ballots to be mailed through primary day, meaning it'll likely be days before the final votes are counted. Dianne Feinstein, who is expected to easily win first place in her primary.

LOS ANGELES President Donald Trump is trying to rally his supporters in California, the epicenter of Tuesday's primary voting, where Republicans face the embarrassing prospect of failing to even get a candidate into the November election for governor.

Following a trend that's been clear throughout 2018's primaries, Tuesday was another big night for female candidates, some of whom took steps toward breaking their states' gender barriers. Should Rouda win, the group has gone 19 for 20, to date, with its preferred campaigns advancing in states like Arkansas, Texas, Ohio, North Carolina and - on Tuesday alone - Iowa, New Jersey and New Mexico, where highly touted hopefuls like Abby Finkenauer won in the Hawkeye State's 1st Congressional District.

Noem's bid for the statehouse corner office has opened South Dakota's at-large House seat, with a three-way race that's drawn considerable out-of-state spending.

And in New Mexico, Democrat Deb Haaland's win puts her on track to become the nation's first Native American congresswoman. In fact, he hasn't been a Republican all that long. Initially, Ryan Zinke - a former congressman who is now Trump's interior secretary - was national GOP leaders' preference for the seat.

California's 48th Congressional District was perhaps the stickiest wicket. A third candidate, state Sen.

Alabama Rep. Martha Roby is headed to a Republican runoff to save her seat after failing to top 50% in Tuesday's primary. Roby declared that she'd vote for someone else - and the Trump loyalists in her district haven't forgotten, putting her at risk of a runoff. She will face Republican incumbent Rod Blum. Kamala Harris and then-Rep.

Two hotbeds of competitive House races held their primaries Tuesday.

Democratic strategists hope to see new evidence of an anti-Trump backlash, particularly in suburban districts across New Jersey and California, where many voters have soured on the Republican president. Navy veteran and former federal prosecutor Mikie Sherrill claimed the Democratic nomination in a district left open by the retirement of Republican Rodney Frelinghuysen.

And in retiring GOP Rep. Clinton carried the district by 7 points in 2016, but Knight, a former state legislator, was re-elected with a 6-point margin. Bob Menendez appears a shoo-in to become his party's nominee, but he must fend off a primary challenger to make it official. It's unclear who their challengers will be.

Democrats, in response to Trump's presidency, have flipped a sizeable 42 state legislative seats since the President took office in January 2017, the latest of which came in Missouri on Tuesday night.

Diane Feinstein is reportedly leading the Senate race. That was fewer than eight years ago, although Schwarzenegger was an outlier-a moderate Republican movie star who won a free-for-all election after a freaky recall of a sitting governor.

Why does this small seat in Missouri matter nationally?

The president urged voters in a last-minute tweet to not let Democrats shut them out. Tuesday's special election was the first time voters have gone to the polls in Missouri since Republican Gov. Eric Greitens resigned in disgrace amid a series of scandals.

The committee's decision to pick some Democrats over other Democrats and slam the GOP for, among many things, supporting Democratic policies stirred up liberal angst in the weeks ahead of the primary and had Republicans crying foul.
