Dr. Kelvin Hong, the director of the Johns Hopkins Interventional Radiology Center, said a four-hour operation to treat the condition described by the White House would be unusual.

When the first lady checked in to Walter Reed on May 14, her spokeswoman said in a statement that she had an "embolization procedure for a benign kidney condition". She was spotted at the side of the president during a meeting at a federal emergency centre in Washington, the first first lady sighting outside the White House in 27 days.

At the briefing, she smiled when the president said she "went through a little rough patch, but she's doing great", but did not speak.

"The Fake News Media has been so unfair, and vicious, to my wife and our great First Lady, Melania", Mr Trump tweeted.

The seemingly unending speculation about her whereabouts appeared to irritate Trump and his wife. The last time Mrs. Trump was seen in public was May 10, when she joined the president at Joint Base Andrews to welcome home three American hostages freed from North Korea.

Speaking to reporters from the South Lawn of the White House before taking off for the G7 Friday morning, President Trump explained why his wife won't be joining him.

She spent almost a week in the hospital and was rarely seen since. During her recovery from surgery they reported everything from near death, to facelift, to left the W.H.

"First lady's great, right there", the president said, pointing up toward the White House. The procedure was successful and there were no complications. Jena Greene, a Gold Star daughter who attended the event with her family, told ABC News the first lady, wearing a black dress and her signature high heels, appeared to be doing well.

Some said Melania had moved back to NY or was cooperating with special counsel Robert Mueller, head of the main investigation into alleged Russian election meddling, that President Trump has branded a "witch hunt".
