Kate Spade's husband says she suffered from depression

Designer Kate Spade, who committed suicide in NY, suffered for years from mental illness but had refused treatment, her sister said on Wednesday (Jun 6).

She was a successful designer, having founded Kate Spade New York in 1993 with her husband Andy Spade, with whom she has 13-year-old daughter Frances.

"We loved Kate dearly and will miss her terribly", Kate's family said in a statement to to the New York Daily News. "There were personal demons she was battling". Our law enforcement sources say after their interview Tuesday they were clear ...

The NYPD confirmed to ET that Kate, 55, was found dead in her Manhattan apartment on Tuesday and her body was discovered by an individual who was employed by her. She also shared that in one of the last conversations she had with her sister, Spade asked her to come to her funeral.

The 55-year-old designer had reportedly fallen into a deep depression over the breakdown of her 24-year marriage before taking her own life, according to TMZ. And it clearly wasn't her.

"I had just started in the fashion industry as an assistant and she was actually filling in as an accessory editor", Zee said. "She got invited to everything - the Met Ball, every fabulous event Kate was invited to - and she declined them all", Shuter revealed.
