Jared Leto's Joker Standalone Movie Officially in the Works!

Despite earning awful reviews, "Suicide Squad" (2016) made Warner Bros. nearly $747 million at the worldwide box office.

To further complicate matters, Variety reports that Warner Bros. previously announced it will be making another "Squad" spinoff by giving Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn character her own movie with "Birds of Prey".

Further details are now sketchy, partly because the project is clearly in its early stages.

Now, Variety is reporting a completely different Joker movie is in the works, starring Suicide Squad's Joker, Jared Leto, which presumably will take place entirely in continuity.

Leto's Joker film will become the second film on Joker to be under production by Warner Bros and DC Comics once an official announcement is made.

That movie, produced in part by Martin Scorsese, will be directed by Todd Phillips of The Hangover series and written by 8 Mile and The Fighter writer Scott Silver.

Joaquin Phoenix was tapped to play the lead; however Warner insisted Leto's version was not being scrapped. Rather, Phillips' film would fall under a new origins banner that would be separate from the current cinematic DC universe. Now both Leto and the studio are in search of a writer.

As you can see, the Clown Prince of Crime's suit is pretty similar to what we got in the film, but his face has an older and more mature look to it. We already know, for example, that Leto is set to reprise his role in the sequel to Suicide Squad, set to begin filming in 2019.
